Fire Destroys Roxie Residence - No One Reported Injured

ROXIE, MS -  APRIL 1, 2012

Fire destroyed the Roxie home of Alisa Humes today in an apparent accidental fire that may have started in the attic but then quickly spread to the rest of the house.  Volunteer Roxie Fire Chief James McNutt arrived at the scene and poured water into the home where most of the smoke plus fire was located but the fire quickly spread. The home is an entire loss and luckily no one was hurt. The home is owned by Ms Juanita Mullins, also a Roxie resident and rented to Ms. Humes. 


Staying with Ms Humes and her son was her sister, Tammy Spalding who is a student at Co-Lin. Ms Spalding said "We lost everything including my sisters purse and the keys to her car.  Also, my new school laptop with all my school lessons and also important paperwork. It has not been a good day" 
  
Roxie Volunteer Fire Chief, Mr. James McNutt had volunteered to bring equipment to open Ms Humes vehicle so the car seat belonging to her 5 year old son Kristofer could be retrieved. The house is located near the corner of Second and Carolina Streets in Roxie and the car was left undamaged.

In the picture to the left shows Dustin McNutt, son of Roxie Volunteer Fire  Chief and his wife Wendy McNutt,  'putting the hose' to the remaining hot spots from the fire in order to prevent a 'flare up' ... Dustin joins his Dad most times and his Dad has said more than once ... 'he (Dustin) has grown up on a fire truck and he knows what he is doing ... he is a true fireman in every sense of the word. I am always glad he wants to help! "

Roxie Volunteer Fire Department Responds to House Fire During Severe Weather Today!

ROXIE, MS - During a short break in the severe winds and the pouring rain today, Roxie Volunteer Fire Department responded to another emergency at about 1:45 pm today.  A neighbor reported a  house on fire at its location on the north side of US Hwy 84 in Roxie.   A house believed to be rented by Athea Johnson and her family of Roxie, was considered a major loss as Volunteer Fire Chief James McNutt and Volunteer Firefighter Gary Cameron brought the flames under control.  Mr. Cameron is also the Franklin County District One Supervisor representing the local area.  The owner is unknown at this time.  It was also reported that no one was at home at the time of the fire.

First Annual "Bark Fest 2012" Date is Announced

ROXIE, Ms - The Brookhaven Animal Rescue League (* BARL)  volunteers and the Brookhaven Animal Rescue Klub (BARK) members will host the inaugural "BARK FEST 2012" Event at the Mississippi School of the Arts campus located on West Monticello Street in downtown Brookhaven, Ms on  Sunday, March 25th 

BARK FEST 2012 kicks off on a delicious note with “Spay-ghetti” plates being served  starting  at 12 Noon.  BARK FEST 2012 visitors and guests may dine on the grounds or pick-up plates to go. The $ 7.00 dollar plates of “Spay-ghetti” includes all the trimmings. 

The fun and games begin at 12:30 p.m. and will continue until 4:00 p.m. Activities will include something for people of all ages – and their pets too! Leashed pets are welcome to be a part of the fun.  A small fee will be charged for the activities.  The fun includes: 

• Bark-a-Lishis Lemonade Stand
• Eye-of-the-Tiger Face Painting
• Bow-Wow-Meow Bake Sale
• Petals-for-Pets Plant Sale
• Hound Dog Hay Ride 
• E-PAW-Mony (think E-Harmony) – adoptable BARL pets will be matched with adopters
• Good-Ole-Fashioned Games for you and your pet
• The Cat’s Meow Upscale Resale Shop featuring vintage, gently used & new items

Event goers may join in the games or just bring out a blanket and lawn chair or lounge around enjoying the afternoon in the Rest-Your-Pet Spot while enjoying some live music.

BARL News .....

“The kids from MSA have been very involved in BARL activities for the last two years, and recently formed a club called the Brookhaven Animal Rescue Klub (BARK). Club members come to the Adoption Center to socialize the animals by walking the dogs and playing with the cats. This socialization goes a long way in helping to get an animal adopted. The students are also a huge help at our off-site adoption events,” said Lu Becker, BARL President.

* BARL is as a non-profit, limited intake animal welfare group. The volunteer-based organization serves Copiah, Franklin and Lincoln counties. BARL provides food, shelter and veterinary services for abandoned, orphaned and unwanted animals until they are adopted. All BARL animals are vet checked, vaccinated and spayed/neutered. Dogs are also micro-chipped.

The Brookhaven Animal Rescue League Adoption Center is located at 501 Northpark Dr. in Brookhaven and is open with volunteers to assist  in choosing the perfect pet. Hours are  Monday - Friday: 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM and Saturday & Sunday: 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM.  If you cannot visit facility during these regularly scheduled hours, you may call (601) 757-4367 to make an appointment. Many of BARL’s adoptable animals may be viewed online at www.barl.net .
